Nate lay stunned in the wake of whatever had just happened between Old Sara and the young man, apparently named Roland. It had been brief, but the emotions coming from both of them could have taken hours to sift through and sort out. When Roland sprinted off, Nate could only breathe a sigh of relief, and was thankful to find he could think almost clearly again.
Sitting up, he groaned as he felt the beginnings of cramps in almost all his muscles. If he could get inside, he could ride out the discomfort until Taka came back and put him back together. Although...
"Sara, what do we tell Taka?"
Feeling apprehension all his own, Nate looked at the now ancient-seeming woman, honestly at a loss for what to do.
Sara straightened slowly, forcing herself to stand as she attempted to put her hair back into place. "The boy is, perhaps, better off not knowing about this. He'll have his own encounter with Roland soon enough, when that lost soul comes back from wherever he ran to. Best not to frighten the child more than needed, Nathan."
Nate nodded, shaking his head as he haltingly forced himself to his feet, wobbling on joints that seemed ready to collapse at any moment. "May we talk later, Sara? I have a lot of questions, I just can't seem to focus on any of them right now, they keep getting clouded over by the people around here."
Sara nodded. "Of course, Nathan. You deserve to know a bit more than you already do. For now, though, let's get you inside and get you a nice cup of tea, hm?" At this, she smiled as though nothing was out of the ordinary.
Nate nodded begrudgingly; the woman knew he wasn't a tea drinker. If it helped him focus enough to put his mental defenses back in place, though, he'd drink almost anything she put in front of him.
Comforted more than a little by her smile, Nate struggled up the steps with some help from the old woman, and the two of them walked into the house.
