Another 10 minutes of driving brought Darzul and Mesozoic into south side Thoncir. In spite of being the poorest section of town, it was probably the safest; the small militia that Darzul had been able to recruit and train acted in place of the absent police force.
Darzul pulled the truck into a large warehouse, guarded by two men wearing winter camo and armed with Carbines. They saluted him sharply, and he promptly returned the gesture.
"Got the Carbines and body armor here, Sargeant," Darzul said. "Do you know how the ammo run went?"
"Better than we ever expected, Colonel," the man told him. "We found ten crates, filled with 50,000 rounds each. And on top of that, we found equipment for the manufacture and reloading of Carbine rounds. We're negotiating the purchase of the warehouse next door and converting it to a factory for ammo."
Darzul laughed aloud. "Sargeant, that's the best news I've heard in weeks. Find Captain Percival and have him meet me in my office in an hour. I want a full debriefing."
After a crisp "Yes, sir," the sargeant pushed a button, opening the gate. Darzul then pulled the truck into the warehouse, filled with men wearing similar uniforms.
"Unload and inventory 'em, boys," Darzul shouted. "Should be 500 Carbines, 300 sets body armor, 500 spare clips. Break out those crates we just found and start loading the clips," he said. The men quickly leapt up and got started.
Darzul turned to face Mesozoic. He looked at the Carbine. "You keep that," he told him. "I've got extras," he said, gesturing toward the back of the truck and smiling. "There's the mess tent," he said, pointing out a window to a building to the west. "If you want, run in and grab some grub, and then we're gonna head back to the hospital."
