Apek nodded approvingly at Maku. "Think nothing of it," he said. "You earned it."
He then sighed when asked for a status report on Remta. "The news isn't all good," he said. "She's in the medical area on the base, got out of surgery about 7 hours ago. Whatever it was that hit her did irreparable damage to her kidney, we had to remove it. So she'll be off her feet a few weeks, taking it easy for a few after that, but she's expected to make a full recovery."
----
Darzul knocked on the half-open door to Drixel's room. "Hey, you got a minute?" he asked. Never waiting for an answer, he closed the door behind him and pulled up a chair near Drixel's bed.
"I don't think we've formally met. General Darzul Vorca, head of the Vorcan Army," he said, extending his hand. His eyes then caught the figurine Drixel had created, and without even thinking about it he picked it up. "Look at the detail," he said, a look of deep thought and curiosity on his face. He then shook his head, and extended his hand again. "Where are my manners," he said, smiling thinly. "And you are?"

Drixel stuck out his hand and shook the man's hand. "im glad you like the figure." Drixel smiled "my name is Drixel sir." he added.
Drixel touched figure still in Darzul's hand and changing it back into a fork. "i dont want the staff to get mad at me for damaging there silverware."
Drixel said looking back at Darzul. "might i ask what brings you here sir?"

Darzul's eyes widened as Drixel changed the figurine back to a fork with a touch. "Well, to be honest, I'm here about that," he said, pointing at the fork. "From what I heard between captain Apek and private Riskan, I'm under the impression that you flew into the air and dive-bombed right into that demon, Shard."
He picked up a scalpel off of a nearby tray of equipment. "Now, as we both know," he said, cutting his palm, "flesh and blood wouldn't survive that." The wound closed, and Darzul wiped the blood off with a sponge from the same tray. "But sometimes there's more to a situation than what you can see."
Darzul then picked up a scalpel and set it in front of Drixel. "This is surgical steel," he said. "Extremely hard, holds an edge very well, doesn't tarnish easily." He looked at Drixel. "Rumor is, you're some type of form-changer, you can take on the properties of things you touch." He looked at the scalpel, then back at Drixel. "Any chance I can talk you into a demonstration?"

Drixel smiled and responded. "sure thing, you might want to stand back."
Drixel closed his eyes for a few seconds as he touched the blade. soon after the steel started to coat with body, his fingers became just as sharp as the blade followed up to his shoulder. small spiked ripped threw the bed sheet as they protruded from drixel's body.
not a minute passed and Drixel was coated in the steel and his whole body was just as sharp. Drixel tried to move the tattered remains of the sheet but only shredding it even more. Drixel finished with a "ta da."

Darzul chuckled. "Next time, Drixel, I'd try touching the handle." He looked at the bedsheets. "I had no idea your shifting was so delicate. Touching something with a honed edge actually gives you an edge in several places. Could be very useful, but that kind of fickleness in a power can blow up in your face if you're not careful." Darzul then thought about the men he knew in the supersoldier program, and what had happened to them. "It seems like it happens more often than not," he muttered silently.
He looked back at Drixel. "Captain Apek put both you and Riskan up for this," he said, holding out a black velvet box. He opened it, revealing a medal within.
"Drixel, for risking life and limb in defense of the city and people of Thoncir, beyond concern for personal risk and safety, the Vorcan Army hereby confers upon you the Medal of Selfless Defense."

Drixel slowly reached out for the box, as he did the metal retreated from his fingers and hands, leaving them bare.
Drixel looked at the metal and replied with a hardy thank you. the sharp metal had left his body when Drixel spoke again. "its a honor sir." he had a short pause "might i ask but when can i leave?"

Darzul sighed. "Physically, I think you're ready to leave whenever." He looked at the floor. "You're a hero, Drixel. I hate to even bring this up, but the hospital is gonna want some kind of payment."
He looked back at the angel. "However, if you're willing to consider joining the Vorcan Army..." Darzul smiled thinly. "Our medical benefits are top-notch," he succinctly added.

Maku held his breath as Apek gave him the news about Sergeant Remta. When he heard that she was expected to make a full recovery, the air rushed out in a sigh of relief. His lips formed into a broad grin, but he quickly dismissed it as he remembered Captain Apek was there. He sat up a bit straighter, trying to ignore the burning sensation in his ears that told him he was blushing.
"That's a relief, sir. I'd been worried that my decision to keep chasing the cloud had..." Maku paused, struggling for the words. "...well, I'd been worried the news would be worse, sir."

Apek nodded. "I understand," he said. "I actually knew Desiree, she lived in my neighborhood. She was only 2 years old when I was serving with the general in the war."
He looked at Maku. "According to the guys in the guard towers, the cloud seemed to lose all interest after its attack on Des - Sargeant Remta," Apek corrected. "Chasing it was definitely the right decision, and it took balls to make a decision." Apek nodded approvingly. "You've already started to justify the army's confidence in you, by displaying confidence in us."

Drixel sat there for a few seconds thinking about what Darzul had told him. he gave a smile and offered a handshake. "count me in sir."

Darzul grinned. "Welcome aboard, Drixel," he said. "I'll go talk to the receptionist and get your medical bills taken care of. In the meantime, captain Apek is with private Riskan. Go pay them a visit, tell the captain I need him to bring you to base and get you your equipment. They're in room 314."
Darzul got up to leave, but turned to look at Drixel before he walked out the door. "I don't know if you need a base to shift from or not, but if you do, feel free to keep that scalpel." Darzul then left Drixel's room, closing the door behind him.

Maku smiled at the good news about Desiree. Sergeant Remta, you mean, he corrected himself, she's your superior officer, don't let yourself get carried away over a crush. She's more than 5 years your senior anyway, not like she'd notice you.
"It's good to know I did the right thing, sir. It's not exactly a feeling I'm used to."

Apek nodded. "People come to the Vorcan Army for a lot of reasons. Some do it for the money, some for the food and shelter. Some just join for the chance to get a Carbine and learn RMMA. Some join for the prestige, or the medical benefits, or for a second chance," he said, a grin creeping at the corners of his mouth as he looked at Maku.
"Hell, a few even join for the drugs; there are 2 ten-story buildings in the northern sector of the base devoted to growing, harvesting, and processing...certain plants - and in some cases, their narcotic derivatives. Most of the heavy hitter painkillers are sold to the hospital at cost, but Darzul considers the drug trade a great way for the Vorcan Army to make money while keeping the streets safer at the same time. We've got pretty much everything, and it's all at cost to the soldiers. As long as you do your job well, we don't care how you unwind when you're on your own time."
He looked out the window, seemingly lost in a memory. "Yeah, people show up at our doorstep for all kinds of reasons. But the reason people stay, the reason over 98% of the people who walk into that recruitment office are Vorcan Army for life, is for the feeling they get when they know they helped someone who really needed it. The feeling you have now, that feeling of knowing you did something, something that matters, and made the world better than it would have been had you done nothing..."
Apek smiled. "That's what it's about, man. That does more for us than all the clout, drugs, weapons, meals and outfits on the planet."

Drixel got out of his bed and got his things together before heading out to room 314. he walked down the hall and stopped in front of the door giving it a slight knock before he peaked his head in. "pardon me is there a captain Apek here i was told by General Darzul that i might find you here." Drixel spoke out.

Apek turned to see the angel standing outside the doorway. He walked over and opened the door. "Come in, Drixel," he said, opening the door. "You said the general sent you here. Did he say why?"
