In the 6 weeks since the incident with Shard near Thoncir General Hospital, The Vorcan Army has begun (and nearly concluded) another cycle of basic training.
The 25 latest VA recruits, among them Maku Riskan, Mesozoic, and Drixel, have been trained in the use of weapons, basic mechanical skills, rudimentary demolitions, and hand-to-hand combat - each of the 25 recruits has been trained to at least purple belt-level proficiency in RMMA, Reyone Military Martial Arts, and nearly half have been trained to red belt-level.
In conjunction with the other, more specialized forms of training, the recruits have also been introduced to a rigorous calisthenic program. Every recruit has lost a fair amount of weight, but each has also at least doubled their physical stamina and considerably increased their strength.
Another two weeks of training and the newest recruits will graduate to the rights and responsibilities of the official rank they possess (private, except in a handful of rare cases.) But until that day, as drill sergeant Draco loves to remind the men, he is the law.
Precisely at 0530, as it had in the 6 weeks previous, revelie sounded, and the men and women of the lined up for inspection. Draco walked up and down the row of recruits as he spoke.
"Congratulations, ladies and gentlemen," he told the group. "When the good general handed you over to me, you were wet sacks of shit. In the 6 weeks since, you've become well-disciplined, well-trained individuals. God willing, 2 weeks from now, you will all take the next step and become honest-to-God Vorcan Army soldiers."
"You will be the elite," Draco continued. "The pride of Thoncir. The first, and last, line of defense against enemies foreign and domestic. When you came into my boot camp, I told you how it was," Draco told them, repeating a sentiment that scarcely a day had passed without his reminding them: "I am the law. What I say goes. When I tell you to do something, you do it. If you don't like it, you can take it up with Vorca, but I doubt very seriously that he will take your side."
"In 2 weeks, that will all change. You will be the law. You will be the eyes, ears, and if need be, the fist of the Vorcan Army. You will be responsible for the safety and well-being of nearly a million people. Enjoy it."
"Eight of you haven't signed up for specialized training yet, and you know who you are," Draco added. "You have a week from today to do so. Get it done, and in the meantime, hit that track and run a mile for each of your fellow recruits who haven't signed up for ST yet. And two more for good measure," Draco threw in, a smile creeping onto his face. "Ten miles, chumps. Get moving!"

Maku groaned with the rest of the recruits as the group hit the track. A few angry glances were thrown in his direction, but he ignored them, worried more about specialized training than about his bootmates being upset about a 10-mile run.
As he ran, Maku's mind paid little attention to the running itself. Over the past 6 weeks, running the track had become automatic for him, and the length didn't bother him too much. He'd been insane at the time, but he'd walked clear across 2 continents long before he'd even heard of the Vorcan Army.
Instead, he thought about ST. He'd kept putting it off, day after day. He'd pored over the list of specializations more times than he could count, but nothing had ever really caught his eye. With a deadline looming, however, he knew he'd have to suck it up and choose.
As much as he hated to admit it, he was built to fight. At least since he'd been given his powers. Infantry would be the easiest choice, by far...but he couldn't shake the fear that he'd lose control again, if he ever found himself in a battle. Demolitions would be another easy choice, but he worried he'd only be good with his own powers, as opposed to "safer" methods, and needing to be at ground zero would make for a piss-poor demolitions expert.
He'd briefly considered becoming a medic, but had laughed that idea off himself. Taka had always been a better caretaker, even before they'd been gifted with their powers. Taka was just better at keeping things healthy than he was, no ifs ands or buts about it.
Specializing in stealth ops or further RMMA training were the only other specializations he'd given any serious thought to, but he just wasn't sure he had what it took to succeed at either one. He hated feeling so indecisive about it, but he just couldn't make his mind up.

Drixel ran the track like he did hundreds of times before. this time there was a lot on his mind. He was still going over the battle with Shard over and over again in his mind. thinking of ways he could have done something else or done a few things better.
his mind then went back to Laura and how he almost had her back in his life then lost her again, this time he knew it was forever.
after about a mile Drixel started to think about his specialized training. the stealth ops was right up his ally. after the running he was going to sign up for stealth. with is ability he knew he would be a huge help.

Mesozoic ran as he had done many times in the past 6 weeks. he had some experience with the motor pool weeks earlier so The Vorcan Army wasn't that new to him. he knew his strength and skills would be a helpful hand in the army.
Meso knew from the start he was going into heavy weapons, rocket launchers min iguns the whole nine yards. a smile drew on his face as he pressed passing who he came to know as Drixel, who seemed to be in deep thought

After the recruits had gone through an hour of morning calisthenics, Draco had sent them to the urban warfare course to practice clearing a room. That had killed about 2 hours.
They had since headed to the RMMA facility for training. The master for this lesson was captain Apek, who had been going over several moves and maxims of RMMA. The group was now practicing his favorite technique, the Piston Toss.
A defensive maneuver against an assailant with a pistol, the maneuver consisted of the hand snapping forward and grabbing the slide of the gun, moving the hand forward enough to move the slide back (both emptying the chamber and taking the slide off the rail), then quickly yanking the arm backward while still holding the slide, and finally firing the arm forward again - like a piston - using the assailant's own slide as a projectile, aiming for the Adam's apple with the throw. The maneuver was only fatal when used by accomplished masters, so at their current level it was safe for the recruits to practice this maneuver against one another.
Apek sipped his orange juice and took bites of his eggs between walks around the room, making corrections to the recruits' technique. Literally out of nowhere, a severed leg fell from the rafters and landed in his food tray, spilling his orange juice everywhere.
"God damn it!" Apek roared. "Is that a fucking leg!? Where the shit did it come from? And where's the rest of the asshole who just ruined my breakfast!?"
He then noticed all eyes were on him, and the practicing had stopped. "Did I tell you to take a break?" he inquired severely, and the group immediately returned to their Piston Toss drills.
About a half hour later, a still-salty Apek heard the phone ring in the facility, and exhaled sharply. "Keep practicing," he told the recruits, and stalked to the phone. "Apek," he curtly announced into the receiver.
After a short pause, Apek spoke. "Yeah, I'm with Draco's class right now, and I was teaching them RMMA until you called me." Another pause. "That's ridiculous. Because I can literally see him in front of me as we speak." A short pause. "Well, let's see if we can't get this straightened out, then. Don't go anywhere," he added to the person on the other end of the line, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Riskan!" he shouted, a tad louder than he had intended. "Front and center!"

As soon as Maku heard the call, he stopped, walking away from his relieved drill partner. Maku took the training seriously, and while his partner had gotten down the basics of the maneuver, Maku had mastered it. While it was only a drill routine to learn the move, his partner still found himself unnerved by the seriousness in Maku's eyes.
Jogging over to Captain Apek, Maku gave a salute. "Sir!"

Apek returned the salute. "First of all, it looks like you've really got the Piston Toss down," he said. "You've got Mordan sweating bullets over there, and his throat looks a bit red. Good job, soldier."
"Second, and the reason this genius interrupted my instruction," Apek continued as he gestured to the phone with his head, "is because you're allegedly AWOL and out of uniform. So I have to ask; do you have any idea why Dr. Marwen thinks you're KO'd at Thoncir General in civilian clothing?"

At Apek's compliment, Maku allowed himself a small smile. It was nothing compared to the pride the compliment gave him. As talked about him being AWOL, though, Maku's smile faded.
There was no way...
"What? But...alright, sir, this might sound a little odd, but...well, I think he's got my twin brother."

Apek looked puzzled. "Twin?" he repeated. "You have a twin?" He then put the receiver to his ear again.
"Hey, apparently Riskan has a twin brother." A short pause. "Yeah, he thinks that's probably who you've got over there." Apek snorted impatiently. "You really can't spare anyone to bring him here?" He sighed. "Fine. We're on our way." Apek then slammed the receiver home.
"Riskan, you're with me," he said, getting up and heading for the motor pool. "Draco, Riskan is AWL the rest of the day. Have them practice the Piston Toss another 15 minutes or so, then move on to whatever you have planned next."
"Yes, sir," Draco crisply replied. He then began to walk around the room, observing the recruits as they practiced and correcting their form as best he could when necessary.

Maku followed Apek to the motor pool, thankful for the excuse to get out from under Sgt. Draco's watchful eye. However, the bulk of his thoughts were occupied with Taka. How had his brother even gotten here? The City was an entire continent away from here! Was it possible that they'd gotten things mixed up? How was he going to explain all of this?
Maku forced himself to take a deep breath, sorting out his thoughts. First things first, make sure it's actually Taka. Then, if it is, make sure he's alright, and tell him everything that's happened. Third, by no means does he join the Army.
Maku surprised himself with that last thought, but as he thought about it more, he knew Taka wasn't suited for it. He'd only truly excel at being a medic, and even then, he knew that he'd be crushed the first time he came across a patient too far gone to save. It was the life he'd chosen for himself, but it wouldn't be Taka's. Not if he could help it.
At present, though, there was the matter of explaining things, like the fact that he wasn't an only child, to his Captain. "Um...Sir? How much trouble am I in for not mentioning the whole twin thing sooner?"

"None," Apek told him. "Unless your twin is also a Unique, in which case the general might be a bit miffed. He likes his men to lay all their cards on the table when it comes to Uniques."
"But if he's not," Apek continued as he started the SUV and drove toward the hospital, "it's honestly a non-issue. A lot of Vorcan Army soldiers don't have any living relatives, and that can be a touchy subject, even for something as simple as filling out a form, let alone a lot of questions. We don't need to know about your family for you to be an effective soldier. Quite frankly, it's none of our business," Apek told Maku as they drove. He then grinned. "Unless a family member leads a Vorcan Army contact to believe one of ours is AWOL. Then, it can be an issue."
