Old Sarah accepted her glass graciously, smiling as she sipped at the juice. "I'm sorry, Inor. I didn't mean to surprise you. It's just been a long day for these old bones of mine, and I was in a rush to find someplace to rest. I'll stay a little more in-the-now from now on, if it helps."
Setting down her glass, Old Sarah stood, excused herself, and walked out of the room. A moment later, she returned, taking her seat back with a smile. "I was just checking on Taka. The poor dear's exhausted, won't be awake for quite some time. I think I might take a nap, myself."
Pulling the lever to put up the footrest, Old Sarah leaned back in the armchair, and quickly dozed off.
Nate watched as Old Sarah fell asleep, leaving himself and Inor sitting in an awkward silence. "Don't worry. You get used to her knowing things she shouldn't. It happens sooner than you think."
Noticing the plaster tools sitting by the wall, Nate smiled slightly. Setting down his juice, he stood and walked over to the equipment, picking up a small container of plaster and a spade to apply it.
"Got some pretty heavy damage to the house, here. Is Thoncir really this dangerous? I've lived in the City my whole life, so I wouldn't know."

Inor smiled setting his juice on the coffee table. "thoncir is a safe city. the damage here is from a fight i got into with a friend. he was going threw some rough times and things got a bit out of hand." Inor stood up. and walked to the boarded up window. "the new window is said to arrive sometime today. finally get some more light in here." Inor mentioned.

Nate nodded. "Good to know. When it gets here, I can help you install it. Sarah's one helluva conversation partner, but she's no handyman. It'll kill some time until the two of them wake up, at least."

Inor smiled. "thanks a lot. after the window is in the house would need is some new paint in places and it wont look like a pile of crap" Inor chuckled.

Several hours later, Nate fell back onto the couch in the living room, admiring the work he and Inor had accomplished. The new window had been delivered on time, and between the two of them, it was installed within an hour.
After that, they'd continued cleaning and repairing the house, while Nate continued to ask Inor about Thoncir, and how he knew Taka and Maku. He'd learned that Maku had arrived in Thoncir some months back, and had joined a local militia that now called itself the Vorcan Army. Apparently, he'd joined with some angel friend of Inor's, and the two were set to graduate in just a few weeks.
Thoncir, Nate had also learned, was an incredible contrast to the City. While it's population was less than that of the Unnamed City, its citizens played a much more active role in keeping the port city running, and while there was the daily stress of living in a large population center, according to Inor, the people were largely content. Compared to the generally depressed and defeated state of mind that many City-dwellers had, Nate thought he'd begun to like the place already.
As he enjoyed a tall glass of cold juice that Inor'd made from some frozen concentrate, Nate glanced over at the still-napping old woman in the armchair. How much of today had Old Sarah foreseen? How long ago had she known they'd come here? Where was she going to lead them next?
Nate pushed the thoughts away, and settled back into the overstuffed cushions of the couch. It seemed he was the only one of the group that hadn't gotten to rest yet today. If things stayed quiet, as he hoped they would, he wanted to change that, and soon.

Maku made his way through the halls of the barracks, silently wishing there was another phone in the complex. Their training focused heavily on discipline and group morale, and during boot camp, getting approved for leave was a rare privilege. The pay phones were open for use from after lunch until lights-out, but the cost of using them discouraged most privates. The only free phones in the building were restricted to inside lines unless there was an emergency.
Walking down to the Entrance Hall, Maku stepped up to the phone closest to the door. Things this afternoon had gone well, but he preferred to keep his conversations as private as he could. Reaching into his pocket, Maku sighed as he pulled out the five coins he'd managed to scrape together. It wasn't much, and it would only buy him maybe 10 minutes if anyone answered, but he'd made a promise to Taka, and he intended to keep it.
Dropping a coin into the slot, Maku hit 0, and the on-base operator picked up the call. Maku gave the address of Drixel and Inor's house, and after dropping in another coin to cover the cost, he heard the ringing start.
In the kitchen of Drixel and Inor's house, the phone mounted on the wall began to ring.

Inor was in the kitchen, finishing up doing the dishes. a few of the dishes had the glow of Inor's power, flying around his head and resting the there respected cabinets.
As Inor finished washing his hands from the suds the phone rang. Inor picked up the receiver and answered "hello how may i help you?" he asked.

Maku spoke quickly and quietly after Inor answered the phone, though he was immensely glad the call had gotten through.
"Hey Inor, it's Maku. Listen, is Taka there? I found him here in town earlier, gave him your address and told him to try and find you..."

Taka lay in the bed he'd stumbled into earlier, looking up at the ceiling in the dark. According to the clock on the wall, it had been over nine hours since Maku had been walked out of the hospital with his hands bound. He'd said he would get in touch, but after nine hours? Taka was beginning to wonder just how much trouble Maku had gotten himself into.
Lost in thought, Taka barely registered the ringing of the phone, but took it as a sign that he'd slept long enough. Just as he opened the door, however, Taka heard Inor talking to the person on the other end, presumably about him.
Rushing out of the bedroom, Taka walked up to Inor, his voice soft. "Who's calling for me?"
Of course, there was only one person from Thoncir who even knew he was in town and at this address, Inor aside. It just had to be his brother.

Taka took the phone, and pressed it to his ear immediately. "Maku? What's going on? Is everything alright?"

Maku had been struggling to respond when the phone was handed over. Apparently, Taka wasn't sleeping as soundly as Inor had thought. At the sound of his twin's voice, Maku smiled.
"Hey. Everything's great, Taka. You shoulda seen it, my drill sergeant walked into the room with my entire training group! Between him and Captain Apek, they made the whole thing look like a misunderstanding, and the tribunal board dropped the charges."

Taka sighed with relief, leaning against the wall as he did. Glancing over, he was only mildly surprised to see Nate sitting on the couch, and Old Sarah napping in the chair.
"That's...that's great to hear, Maku. How long until you're done with the Army? I need to explain some things, there's...a problem back in the City."

Maku was quiet for a moment, partly because another trainee had walked through the door, and was still well within earshot, and partly because he wasn't entirely sure how to respond. After the other man rounded the corner, Maku waited a few seconds before letting out a sigh.
"Taka...I'm gonna need you to stick with Inor for a bit. I graduate from boot camp in a few weeks, there's a whole lot of people taking leave around then. Until then...well, I'm lucky I could scrape together the coin to make this call. Turns out boot camp doesn't pay real well."
Glancing around out of habit, Maku took a breath before continuing. "Whatever's going on in the City, Taka...I'm not sure how much I'll be able to help. I mean, after graduation, there'll be a little bit where things aren't too busy, but the week after, I've gotta be back on base to start specialized training. This isn't some summer job for me, Taka. This is for real."
