Darzul parked the SUV on the curb outside Inor's house. He and Apek exited the vehicle and looked at the residence.
"Bit of a fixer-upper," Darzul commented.
"That's an optimistic appraisal," Apek said. "I'd call it an eyesore."
"An eyesore?" Darzul repeated. "So there's wood covering up a hole in the roof. The place doesn't look that damn bad."
"Sure, not to guys like us," Apek replied. "But we've slept in muddy holes in the ground with nothing but perforated canvas to keep most of the rain off of our heads. Neighborhood like this, I'm almost surprised some old lady hasn't called to complain."
Darzul chuckled. "This isn't Douglas Hills, Onnie," he said. "The folks living here are just glad they have affordable places to live that are big enough to live in comfortably," he continued as he walked toward the front door.
"No, it's not Douglas Hills," Apek admitted, "but it's also a far cry from the west side ghetto," he retorted as he followed Darzul. "Sooner or later somebody around here is gonna grow an ego, and start hassling people like this guy."
"Well, we'll cross that 'decency society' bridge when we come to it," Darzul said. He firmly knocked three times on Inor's front door.

"Hello, sir," Darzul immediately spoke up, his voice authoritative but respectful. "I'm general Darzul Vorca, head of the Vorcan Army. This is captain Onthinor Apek," he said, gesturing to Apek, who thinly smiled and nodded.
"We learned that private Maku Riskan's brother could be found at this address. Could I have a word with him, please?"

"Thank you very much," Darzul said, a cordial smile on his face. He entered the house, Apek in tow.
Darzul looked around the room, noticing the demon who had granted him entry, as well as an elderly woman dozing and a man seemingly preoccupied with his own thoughts.
"I realize it's getting a bit late, but I was hoping to ask the young man a few questions. Is he available, or is there a better time for me to come back?"

Old Sarah feigned a yawn and lowered the footrest of her armchair. She'd been dozing lightly for the past hour or so, and had clearly heard Taka's half of the phone call from Maku. The knock on the door had finally brought her back to consciousness, and as this general entered the house, the old woman went through the motions of waking up.
Reaching for her cane, Old Sarah brought herself to her feet and turned to face the three men standing by the door. "Inor, I'll check on him. Nate would be glad to get you some juice, if you're interested, wouldn't you, Nathan?"
Smiling courteously, Sarah made her way down the hall to the guest bedroom, knocking softly on the door before slipping into the room.
Nate had just begun to doze off when two more guests arrived, and before their names had even registered in his mind, Old Sarah was up and moving, placing the burden of good hospitality squarely on his and Inor's shoulders. She made her way towards the guest bedroom before Nate could protest, and with a small sigh, he brought himself to his feet.
"Nate Gideon," he said, walking over and extending a hand to the two men. "Can I get you something? Not much more than juice or water at the moment, I'm afraid..."

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Gideon," Darzul said, shaking his hand. "Like I mentioned to your friend, my name is Darzul Vorca."
"Onthinor Apek," the captain said as he shook Nate's hand.
"And no, thank you, I'm fine. But I do appreciate the hospitality," Darzul told him.
"A glass of water would be great," Apek said. "If it's not too much trouble, of course."

Nate nodded in turn as each man shook his head, and made his way to the kitchen. "None at all. I was a tad thirsty myself," Nate explained as he poured himself and this Apek each a glass of water. Walking back to Apek and the general, Nate handed the captain his glass.
"I might've heard you wrong, but did you say private Maku Riskan? As in, military?"
Shutting the door behind her, Old Sarah hooked her cane on the doorknob as she made her way quietly through the dark room. Taka was sleeping soundly on the bed, at least, he seemed to be.
Old Sarah hadn't had a chance to speak with the boy since the mess back in the City that morning, and now the local military was looking for him. She needed to know what she'd missed, and there was one surefire way to get all the answers she was looking for.
Gently sitting on the edge of the bed, Old Sarah reached up and placed her hand softly on Taka's forehead. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath as the day's events unfolded in her mind, from the horrors Roland's men had unleashed at the hospital, to the tense phone call he'd received from Maku only a few minutes ago. With a sigh, she pulled her hand away, and stood again.
Maku had left Taka a warning about the military, one that, in his shock and disappointment, Taka had failed to relay to anyone else. Now, that message had finally reached someone who could obey it.
Walking back to the door, Old Sarah grabbed her cane, slowly pulled the door open, and quietly left the quest bedroom.

"That's right," Apek told Nate. "I was actually there to meet him on the day he signed up, 6 weeks ago. Soon he'll finish basic training, at which time private Riskan will enjoy all of the benefits the Vorcan Army has to offer."
"As well as the responsibilities it entails," Darzul said. "Keeping the peace in this city and helping get the old infrastructures up and running is no easy feat, but Maku Riskan was willing to answer the call."
"Thanks to him, and the men and women like him, every home in Thoncir has safe, reliable water and electricity available. Public transportation is becoming more commonplace, garbage pickup is almost ready to change from bi-weekly to weekly. Hell, we're only a few years away from having a handful of cable channels and a rudimentary Internet." Darzul then chuckled. "Now I suppose it's just a matter of having content available for either."

Nate couldn't hide his surprise. Not at the way that the general had launched into a spiel about the wonders of the military, that much, he guessed, came with the rank. What had him struggling to pick his jaw up off the floor was the idea of Maku Riskan, unrepentant gang-killer, not only being trusted with guns, but actually proving himself deserving of that trust.
"Wow...my older brother was in the army, and I remember the change we saw in him after he came back from basic. I thought that was drastic. But Maku Riskan? Wow...just...wow."
Old Sarah walked over to the group, gripping her cane tightly. Stepping up to Nathan's side, she overheard his comment, and rewarded him with a sharp whack in the shin with her can. "Hold your tongue, Nathan! Maku was just as much a tenant of mine as you were, and I won't have my people speaking poorly of one another. That boy has walked a rough road, and until you've done the same, you've no room to talk."
Giving Nate one last glare, Old Sarah turned to face Darzul, her expression immediately softening again. "Darzul, was it? I'm so sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Vorca, but the boy's had a long day, and he needs his rest."

"I understand," Darzul said. "I'll come back later. I might stop by tomorrow, is there a time that works best for him? And the rest of you, for that matter."

Old Sarah looked around at the others, then back at Darzul. "Well, Mr. Vorca, I'll speak with Taka once he wakes up, and we'll be keeping an eye out for you sometime tomorrow afternoon, alright?"

Darzul nodded and smiled at the old lady. "That's fine. Tomorrow afternoon works out great."
He then turned and walked out the door, stopping one last time to offer a wave. "It was nice to have met you all," he said, before walking out the door. Apek followed closely behind, closing the door behind him.
"Well, we know he's here," Darzul said. "All goes well, we can talk to him tomorrow."
"If you don't mind my asking," Apek asked, "what's so special about Riskan's brother? I know you've always been a bit more aggressive when it comes to recruiting Uniques, but you usually don't go through the song and dance personally. What makes this kid so valuable?"
"Remember the equipment in that hidden bunker below the garage?" Darzul asked as the two entered the SUV.
"That shit works?" Apek asked. "His eyes then went wide. "No. No way, man, you can't be serious."
"As serious as a heart attack," Darzul replied as he began driving back to base. "The experiments worked, Onnie. They made ordinary people into Uniques."
"They also made good soldiers into corpses," Apek said. "Hell, in major Fowler's case, it made a good soldier into a bomb, that killed a lot of people and destroyed the equipment. Now you wanna see if you can do it again? You know damn well that treatment has always caused its subjects to be destroyed by their own powers."
"Exactly," Darzul said. "And that's why the kid is important. Between a transfusion of my blood to act as a regenerative compound, and the abilities of a Unique with healing powers, we can make this work. Obviously on a much smaller scale, we've only got the equipment and safeguards for one candidate at a time, but with Riskan's twin's help, we can do this safely."
"I don't want any part of this," Apek said. "I want nothing to do with your little experiments, Unique or no Unique," he firmly stated.
"When we came back to Thoncir after the war, I asked you to trust me," Darzul said. "I asked you to have faith in my judgment. With this kid's powers, and my blood, we can protect the Uniques from their own powers until their bodies adjust!"
Apek turned to look at the general. "I do trust you," he said. "And I do have faith in your judgment. But more that half of the people in the Army worship you like a god. I want you to promise me you won't coerce anybody into doing this."
"Whadya mean, coerce?" Darzul said. "You think I would make somebody go through the procedure?"
"Cut the bullshit, Darzul," Apek responded. "You know exactly what I mean by 'coerce', and you've very good at it. If you wanna move on this, and I still don't think you should, I expect the whole deal to be entirely voluntary. If it's not, I will walk away from this. The experiments, the army, all of it."
"Damn," Darzul replied. "Onthinor Apek draws his line in the sand." Darzul noticed he wasn't smiling, and simply parked the car back in the motor pool. "Strictly voluntary," he told Apek. "You have my word."
Apek nodded, satisfied. "That's always been good enough for me."

Inor looked around the the house and all that he had done to clean and fix it up. he glanced down at his claws and balled them up into a fist. "i was once one of the most feared demons in hell. now i am a damn house maker." inor punched a near by wall, his hand going right threw. "i will no longer stand for this."
Inor grabbed his cloak throwing it over his shoulders and lifting the hood up. as he reached for the door a thought ran threw his mind. he doubled back and left a note on the fridge. he actually carved his message into the front of this fridge. (Gone to find myself) that was all he could fit on this fridge so he carved his name on the near by kitchen cabinet.
he then headed for the door and left the house. his destination unknown to even him, he was just gonna see what lie ahead
