Maku accepted the cord and put it between his teeth. Once it was secured, he nodded at the medic. He was as ready as he was going to be.

The medic firmly held Maku's wrist with one hand, his finger with the other. One flick of his wrist and the finger was put back into place, accompanied by an unsettling popping noise and a stab of pain.

Maku groaned into the cord at the flash of pain, then relaxed visibly as the pain receded. There was a sharp ache, to be sure, but nothing compared to what it had been. Removing the cord, Maku thanked the medic.
He wasn't happy about having to take it easy for a few weeks, but this arm was easier fixed than his false one. Marwen would hopefully be able to fix it quickly, but the fact that it needed fixed at all still weighed heavily on him.
Glancing at Apek, Maku resigned himself to whatever happened next. He'd do his best, and resolved to keep himself under better control in the future, assuming he was given the chance to try.

As the weeks went by, Apek's students grew more and more adept at the martial art. Maku's injury healed as the class progressed, and proved to be neither the last nor the most serious. As students were hurt and healed, they were able to receive valuable knowledge from observing where their classmates excelled, and where they struggled.
Of the ten students Apek had started with, four had achieved their brown belts - Maku, Fisher, Sarkesh and Reyner. The rest had gained their orange belts, with the exception of Verali, whose broken leg halfway through ST had prevented her from advancing beyond red belt.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Apek said on the last day of ST, "you have all completed 8 weeks of specialized training. With the exception of private Verali, of course," he added.
"Sorry about that, Kari," Fisher said under his breath.
Kary smiled brightly. "Don't be," she told him. "Now that I've seen all the mistakes you guys made, I'll have that orange about 2 hours into the next round of ST."
Apek grinned. "That's the spirit," he said, distributing RMMA Proficiency Medals based on rank achieved, as well as the belts that went with them.
"Now that you're done with this, you guys will either be starting your infantry assignments or, in a few cases, training to become a master and teach new recruits the art. In the meantime, you have 3 days of leave and 8 weeks' pay, minus what you've managed to piss away already. Don't do anything too stupid during your leave," he added. "Dismissed."
As the group dispersed, Fisher and Sarkesh walked up to Maku. "Hey, man, we're gonna go put a few coins down at the Crystal Crown tonight," Fisher said. "Care to join us?"
