As his assailant dropped before him, Shin took notice of the rest of the fight. The officer in charge had already brought down two men, and the man he'd been speaking with was offering what help he could. He guessed that they'd have the room quiet in a few minute's time.
Slipping out the front door of the barracks, Shin stood outside, his back against the wall. Part of him was tempted to help quell the fighting, but he held himself back. He'd gotten this far by sticking to the plan, and he wasn't about to change that habit over a melee with a group of junkies.

Mordecai continued and watched as the other guys had taken down their guys and he quickly increased the pressure on the neck of the man feeling him slowly go limp in his arms.
Mordecai slowly lowered the man to the ground and looked around for anybody else looking to continue this little quarrel. He relaxed and looking to the victim but noticed he had left the room but it looked like he had taken care of his man fairly easily.

As Relas put the last of the unruly recruits out of commission, he stood back, glaring at the writhing, undisciplined upstarts that now lay before him. He noticed that Mordecai had brought one down as well, and his attention seemed focused elsewhere. Relas would deal with that later, but this was a good learning opportunity.
"Listen up and listen well, boys," Relas said. "I know some of you might not believe me, but I wasn't being that damn hard on you. A lot of guys around here would have put you all in the infirmary almost by accident. You guys are some of the sorriest fighters I've ever seen," Relas told them, knowing it wasn't true but also knowing that calling the group out like that would get the good ones to shape up and the bad ones to ship out.
"You're all confined to quarters until further notice," he said. "If you aren't told, by me or a higher-ranking Vorcan Army soldier, that you can leave then you will stay here or so help me I'll go get a guy who really knows how to beat some ass."
Relas then left the barracks to try and track down the ones who had left.

Mordecai stood at attention when the sergeant was calling out the group. He knew this was something to help people realize that this was the real deal. He had a slight smile because this was the discipline he was used to and stepped over the bodies that still laid strewn on the floor.
He adjusted his uniform after the sergeant left and went to his desk and went back to work on his sketches and was writing in a small book. He knew from his experience that writing stuff down even if it was just events of the day helped him keep his mind in what he needed.
He would occasionally look around and would slip the paper with the gun into his pocket so he knew where it was and wouldn't be stolen. After a while he went and laid on his bunk and read a bit and thought since they couldn't leave.

Shin listened as the noise inside quieted down, and heard every word of Relas' speech through the door. He liked this officer; the man wasn't above getting his hands dirty when the situation called for it. He was almost interested to see who he'd spoken off, the man who 'really knew how to beat some ass'. Of course, he'd prefer to find out under better circumstances.
Then the officer left the barracks, heading out the door before Shin had time to dash out of sight. He resigned himself to being seen, and resisted the urge to snap off a salute. It wouldn't do to hint at his military career, not yet. It would simply raise too many questions.
Instead, he acknowledged the officer's presence with a nod, pushing off the wall to stand straight on his own. He'd been caught outside his quarters without leave; there was no sense trying to shrink back if there were consequences to deal with.

Relas noticed the olive-skinned man who had started the fight - or at least been hit when it began.
"How the hell did you get out here?" he asked. Before waiting for a response, he simply shook his head. "You and all of the others are confined to quarters until further notice. Get back in there."
He then paused, and approached Shin. "You alright, kid? That looked like it hurt in there."

Shin offered a smile, keeping his mouth shut tight. He'd lost one of his front lower teeth, and he hoped that the darkness outside would help hide the gap from view. The tooth would grow back in a few days' time, but he'd rather avoid questions about where the replacement had come from, if he could.
"It looked worse than it was, sir. Bit the inside of my cheek, got a little bloody. Nothing serious."

Relas nodded. "Okay, good. If it doesn't stop bleeding, head to the infirmary. Now did you see which way the others went?"

Shin pointed the sergeant in the direction of the other fleeing recruits, and slipped into the barracks once he had left. He grabbed his bag off the bunk that had started the commotion, and headed for a less-populated section of bunks.
Taking notice of the strange uniform the officer's ally was wearing, Shin settled into a bunk near the man's desk. He lay his bag on the floor next to his bed, and lay down, staring mutely at the bunk above him.

Mordecai had continued writing and then started to read his book from when he was on Earth and the times he had spent in Vietnam. Just some old experiences kept the areas fresh in his mind and the other memories there.
He noticed the olive skinned man laying on the bed next to his desk. Everything seemed to have calmed down and nobody was making a ruckus and it was quiet. He looked over quickly reached into his pocket and tossed him a handkerchief and tossed it his way.
Hey here ya go, to clean up the blood. He said in a calmer voice and quieter voice. He didn't want to attract attention from any of the druggies or anything like that. He went up to his upper bunk above the man as he slid his book into his back pocket for safe keeping.
Whats your name man He said just being friendly and trying to get to know some of the people he figured would have any chance at making it through this boot camp without getting their asses 'beat'.

Shin caught the handkerchief with one hand, wiping at his mouth to clean what he could. With the cloth at his mouth, he spoke, his voice muffled only slightly.
"My friends call me Shin. Good to speak to someone who isn't confining me to quarters or offering to rearrange my face. If tonight is any indication, it couldn't hurt to have a friend or two around here. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Mason."
Things were quiet in the barracks then, as those knocked out during the ruckus remained unconscious, those who'd stayed awake tired out from the experience, and those who had fled still gone. With no conversation from his new acquaintance in the bunk above, Shin took the chance to relax as much as his surroundings would allow.

Sargeant Relas spent all afternoon (and thanks to one problem case, a good chunk of the night) rounding up the recruits who had fled the brawl. He managed to get them all into the barracks, however, where most of them slept - exhausted from either the fight or the running away from it - with only a handful of recruits unable to sleep.
The next morning at 0500, reveille blew for the well-rested and the still awake alike. As the group came out of the barracks, standing more or less in formation along with recruits from 3 other barracks, sargeant Relas began slowly walking up and down the line of people.
"Welcome to the Vorcan Army," he told the group. "My name is sargeant Relas, and for the next 8 weeks you belong to me. You do what I tell you, when I tell you, or you learn to regret it. If you pay attention, do as you're told, and don't do anything too stupid, the hardest part of this will be the running. If you run away or run your mouth, the running will quickly become the easiest part. Any questions?" After only the briefest pause, Relas started up again.
"Good. Now about that running. We're gonna see what you group are capable of. For starters, we're gonna run one mile. That's six times around these barracks. Let's get moving, kids," he said, breaking into a jog and leading the group.

=SIX WEEKS LATER= Shin was breathing hard as he opened the door to the barracks, making sure the door was closed and the coast was clear before he dropped the act. The runs and workouts during basic had intensified during the last several weeks, but it still required effort on his part to seem as tired as his fellow recruits. If they catch me out before the time's right, it might just be because it's been decades since I had to fake being out of breath. In the quiet of the room, he allowed himself a grim smile at the thought.
Glancing back at the door, he moved quickly over to his bunk. He'd gone ahead of the others as they broke for their midday meal, and he knew he wouldn't have long before his absence was noted at the mess hall.
Reaching his bunk, he knelt down and lifted his mattress, reaching under it to grasp one of the support struts that kept the bed level. The other end was already loosened after his efforts through the previous weeks, all that remained was a damaged tack-weld holding the piece in place.
After a few minutes of work punctuated with nervous glances to make sure he was still alone, a dry -snap- echoed through the empty room, and Shin found himself holding a flat piece of steel, just over a yard long. Smiling slightly, he laid the piece back in place and replaced his bed, making sure it still looked made from this morning. Satisfied, he rushed back out the door, re-laboring his breathing as he made haste towards the mess hall.
If they'd noticed his absence, there'd be hell to pay, but it was worth it for the knowledge that he'd be able to defend himself if was found out.
