"Ha ha," Darzul muttered sarcastically, hopping into the driver's seat. With a crisp turn of the key and a swift stomp on the accelerator, Darzul and Mesozoic shot out of the parking lot and onto the nearby road.
"Grab that carbine, Meso," Darzul said as the SUV carried the two back to the militia base. "I don't think anyone was following us, but some kinda shit was going down in that hospital and if someone is, I'm counting on you to stop 'em." Darzul then sighed. "I'm glad we're out of there, and I'll be a lot more glad when we're back to base."

Darzul settled in his seat. "The game plan is simple, private," he said. "We did our part as far as that guy with the wings. So now, we wait for him to contact us."
"Speaking of contacts," Darzul added, "I paid off a guy a few days back for info on an old Reyone Army motorpool. He finally made good on his end of the bargain, so we have the location of about 10 tanks, about 2 dozen Jeeps and SUV's, and two attack helicopters. We'll have to get a lot of men together to drive everything out of there, and I could always use another. You in?"

Maku reached Thoncir General within a few minutes of leaving Drixel's house, and was glad to find that his right arm was fine, once the muscles relaxed. It was still sore, probably would be for a day or so, but it seemed that there would be no lasting effect.
Walking into the reception area, Maku began walking to the front desk, but decided it better to wait as he caught a glimpse of the receptionist. She was young, and was most likely pretty under normal circumstances. However, whatever she'd been through today was taking its toll, as her hair was visibly unkempt, and she seemed to radiate stress as she shuffled papers around the desk.

Drixel walked a few steps behind maku into the front doors of the Thoncir General right up to the front desk. the lady behind the counter was shuffleing threw her paper work.
"Pardom me miss but i have a man here who needs some help with his arm." Drixel said as he watched the woman shuffle more threw her papers she gave a quick glance up.
"room 5 wait there till a doctor is ready to see you." she said. Drixel loooked down the hall and spotted room 5 he pointed it out in case Maku has hadnt already seen it.

Maku nodded, proceeding down to the room Drixel had pointed out. Once inside, he sat on the crinkly paper covering the bed/seat of the exam room, and waited.
After about 20 minutes or so, Maku finally heard footsteps coming down the hall. The door opened, revealing a young man, barely older than 30, in a labcoat. On his chest was pinned a nametag, proclaiming him to be 'Doctor Matheson, M.D.' Maku was skeptical, but, considering the times, didn't dwell on it for too long.
"So, you're my patient of the hour, it seems. Sorry for the delay, we've been absolutely swamped today. I've got some stories to tell, but that's really the only 'pro' of being this busy."
Shaking his head, the young doctor reached into a drawer, pulling out a pair of surgical scissors. He then walked over to Maku, and with a few snips, undid the wrapping around his left arm, throwing the bloodied strips of cloth in the trash. Turning his attention back to Maku, he gestured for him to turn, showing his injury. Once Maku did, the man gave a low whistle, before flipping on an overhead lamp, and pulling up a stool behind Maku.
"This...does not look good. But something tells me that doesn't surprise you much, does it?"
Maku shook his head, grimacing as the young man began to examine the wound. "I planned for bad news. My question is, how bad?"
Dr. Matheson stood, walking around Maku, and pulled out a small rubber ball from his pocket. Placing it in Maku's left hand, he instructed Maku to squeeze it as tightly as he could, before letting go. For a split-second, there was only silence, followed by the thud of the ball hitting the floor.
Maku stared at the ball, then at his hand, and back and forth between the two. He'd squeezed the ball, as instructed, his face frozen in a mask of pain from the effort. However, as soon as the doctor had released the ball, it had fallen out of his grasp. The weight of the ball alone had been enough to rotate his wrist to a point where it could fall freely.
"That was a simple strength and dexterity test. We use it in post-surgery patients to see how they're doing at various points in their recovery. The result of yours is consistent with a patient still under the effects of anesthetic after massive musculo-skeletal reconstruction. I've only seen similar results in fully conscious patients twice in my career."
Maku listened, his expression grim. And? What happened to those patients?"
Dr. Matheson shook his head. "In my experience, both patients lost nearly 90% of the use of their hand. Their muscle strength was severely compromised in the affected limb, and after years of recovery, both of them we unable to perform more than the most basic tasks with the hand. I've heard of similar cases from other hospitals, but they all have similar results."
Walking back over to Maku's shoulder, he looked closely at the wound. "On the bright side, it seems that whatever caused the injury has been completely removed from the wound. That's good, means you'll recover quicker, with less chance of infection. You won't be needing major surgery, either, which ought to smooth things out for you."
Maku stared at the wall, dumbfounded. He'd been prepared for bad news, but not this bad. After nearly 2 minutes of being seemingly catatonic, Maku finally mumbled out, "What are my options?"
Matheson shook his head, frowning slightly. "Well, you can let it go, live with it, and we can get you into PT before your muscles atrophy entirely, you can try and find a magical healer...or you can have the arm amputated, and get fitted for a prosthetic."
Maku listened, immediately crossing off Option 2. The only one he knew of was Taka, and he couldn't go back to the City as things were. Then, Option 3 joined Option 2 in the wastebucket. Amputation was extreme, and he didn't have any way of paying for surgery. That left only Option 1. Live with it, and try and stave off the worst of it. He sighed, shaking his head.
"Put me down for Option 1...anything we can do right now?"
Matheson nodded. "Right now, I can get you stitched up here, and we can get you some painkillers, and a new bandage. Anything else is a bit beyond our budget. Unfortunately, PT isn't free...we can work out a payment plan, but we can't just give it away. We've gotta stay open somehow."
Maku nodded, understanding. "Alright. I'll be back as soon as I've got a way to cover the therapy. Now hurry up with the pills."
---------------------
About an hour and a half after entering Room 5, Maku exited, his mind slightly fogged by the drugs, and his shoulder wrapped in new, sterile bandages. He walked down the hall slowly, the fog in his head blocking out the harsh reality of his situation, and allowing him to wear a small smile.

Maku nodded dumbly, Drixel's words barely making it through the haze. The first dose they'd given him had been fairly massive, with instructions to go sleep it off, get him started on the road to whatever recovery he could manage.
Shuffling towards the door, he slowly made his way in the general direction of Drixel's home, needing help from Drixel every few houses or so.

[glow=white,1,500]A momentary flash of light filled the lobby of Thoncir General's emergency room, fading to reveal a distraught-looking Warrior Angel, carrying a badly injured woman. After those in the lobby regained their sight after the flash, the small space suddenly filled with activity, as the woman was placed on a gurney and wheeled off. A large orderly tried to hold the glowing angel back, but was left thoroughly confused as the body he'd been restraining seemed to fade away from his arms.
Now merged with the light of the area, Taelyrn followed the girl's gurney down the labyrinthine hallways. He stopped his observation out of a combined fear and respect as she was wheeled into the ER's operating room.
-----
A few hours later, Taelyrn sat low in an armchair in the girl's room. He'd spoken with the girl's doctor, and the news wasn't anything to be excited about. They could make her remaining time painless, but hoping for more than that was unrealistic. He ignored that now, though, much as he had when the doctor had told him in person. He was an angel, dammit...and a Warrior Angel, at that! There had to be something he could do!
However, as he'd sat in the chair, listening to the beeping of the girl's heart for the second time that day, he ran out of ideas. Again, the name at the door read 'Jane Doe'. Again, she was asleep, perhaps never to awake. Again, just as the first time, he was struck by something about her, something he still couldn't place. And again, the Warrior Angel of Light closed his eyes in prayer.
Dear Lord,
Please, I beg of you again, much as I did barely a full day ago, help her. If it is her time, let it be peaceful. If it is not, then please, Lord, please...give me a sign. Anything, I beg.
Amen
Before he could open his eyes again, however, Taelyrn flinched, a human reflex, as the light in the room seemed to change. Opening his eyes with a squint, he saw through the picture window that the sun was beginning to set, casting it's rays through the branches of a large tree. The shadows of that tree now filled the room, causing the sunlight to flicker and dance across the walls, the ceilings, even the girl....
Wait...
No way...
As the shadows from the tree danced across the girl, it almost seemed as if there was something in the shadow. After a moment, the something gained a surreal definition, as the shadows on the girl's chest, above her heart, formed the shape of a ring, with wings connected to an angular shield. Glancing at his own seal, Taelyrn saw the similarity between the two.
Taelyrn ran to the window, looking up at the sky. He gave a grim smile and a nod, blinking away unbidden tears as he ran to the bed. Glancing around the room, he bit his bottom lip, crossing his fingers as the room filled with bright light. When it faded, Taelyrn, the girl, and a good deal of the medical equipment in the room were gone.[/glow]

Drixel and inor sent a good hour looking all over town for Maku, asking shop owner after shop owner if they had seen him but they came up empty handed. "at this rate we may never find him" Drixel said as the two came to rest in front of Thoncir General hospital.
